Interview with Julie Rubio

By Shannon G.

Julie

Julie C. Rubio-Shamblin.

I was born in Santa Barbara, California, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

My mother's name is Nancy Joan Rubio and my father's name is Edward Daniel Rubio.

I was born in Santa Barbara and raised in Carpinteria, California. I have lived here my entire life. I actually live on a ranch that I have always lived on. It is a fifty acre ranch in the Carpinteria foothills and we grow avocados.

I have lived in the same house my entire childhood, until I attended U.C.S.B..

The thing that I remember most about my childhood is growing up in this wonderful town of Carpinteria, spending time with my large family and friends, attending Warrior football games, and attending dance classes everyday.

Julie

My background involves dance and business. I attended U.C.S.B. right after graduating from Carpinteria High School and majored in Business Economics. While both in high school and college I was a member of the cheerleading squads and dance programs. I have worked with youth my entire life. After graduating from U.C.S.B. I finished my California Teaching Credential from Chapman University. I now own a dance studio in Carpinteria, California.

My family's background is very similar to my own. Both my mother and my father were born in Santa Barbara, California. They have lived in various places throughout their lives, but for the last forty years they have lived in Carpinteria. I have two sisters, Kathy and Melissa, who are 15 and 13 years older than I am. They live in Carpinteria and are both married. I am married to Bryan James Shamblin. We have dated since high school. My sixth great grandfather was Pedro Jimenez and he is noted throughout history books as one of the first Indians to live in Carpinteria. My other grandparents were the Cravens. They were very well known in Carpinteria and have a street named after them. My great grandparents were The Bailards of Carpinteria. They were all some of the first families in this area. Most of my family has lived in this area for a very long time. My mother is the Vice-President of Nursing at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. My father was a truck driver before and now he farms the ranch that we live on. I used to work at the Carpinteria Boys and Girls Club as the Girls Program Director. I also work at the Carpinteria Unified School District as a substitute teacher.

My parents are my biggest role models. They are very successful and hard working. They taught me at a very young age to work hard in school and to always try my hardest. My teachers are also very influential in my life.

I am currently a dance instructor. I own my own studio and teach dance to 180 students per week. I love my job. 14K Jules Dance Academy, 4646 Carpinteria Avenue B-1, Carpinteria, California 93013, (805)566-1032

Julie

I am involved with working with children, teaching dance and cheerleading. I will be starting my master's program at the University of Southern California in September. I have always been very determined to achieve in anything I try. I am willing to work hard and will take advice from those whom I feel know best. I try to stay very busy, and happy. I am a leader because I always try to work well with people and stay positive. Civil Leadership means taking an active position in your community and surrounding environment and helping to make positive changes.

The contributions that I have made to the community are simple: I love kids and believe in them 100%. I am here to teach kids how to excel in dance, have fun, and make some terrific friendships along the way. Change happens all the time. I feel that change is good and is the main ingredient for happiness and progress. I think everything has changed since I became a leader. A good leader can adapt to that change and still remain a leader. I have been involved in the community for the past 10 years.

I have been in business for the past three years. I can be reached by email at: dance14k@aol.com.

I ran with the bull in Pamplona, Spain. I traveled around Europe right after I graduated from U.C.S.B.
