Interview with Andy Powell

Andy Powell

Andy's full name is Andrew Boone Powell. He is named after Daniel Boone because he is related to him. Andy was born at Saint Francis Hospital (Santa Barbara). Andy's parent's names are Joyce and Harry Powell. Andy grew up in Carpinteria, California. He lived behind the polo field and he had horses and a two story house. He used to slide down the stairs in a cardboard box. He had a cat, a dog, a chicken and rabbits. He used to play badminton on the lawn.

What he remembers most about his childhood is going to school and to the beach and visiting relatives in Florida. He would walk halfway to school and then ride the bus. His background is English and Scottish. He has three sisters and a brother who all live in Carpinteria or Santa Barbara. Andy has three kids. His mother's parents came to Carpinteria in the 1930's. His grandfather was a school teacher at Carpinteria High School. His grandfather sold cars. Andy's mom went to Main School in Carpinteria the first day it opened. They went to school in a big tent where the pool is now. They walked over to Main School the first day it opened. They moved to Kansas when they were ten years old. Andy's mom is retired, but is now the President of the Board of Trustees at Santa Barbara City College.

Andy is an electrical contractor. He does lighting, wiring, and bidding. His workers come to his office which is behind his house. Andy put in the lighting at the new hockey rink in Carpinteria and he still helps there. He goes to the shop class at the high school once a year. He wanted to help out in the community ever since he lived here. His parents helped with the school board. Civic Leadership means people working together trying to make the community better, and taking a stand on issues so that people can make good decisions. Andy was on the board at the Boy's Club, then on the committee to make the hockey rink. He has been involved with the community for six or eight years. Something unusual that has happened to him is that he got left on a family vacation. They drove off and had to come back.
