My Interview with Carola Bronislava Jakubowska

By Cloe T.

My name is Carola Bronislava Jakubowska. I was named after my father's mother Bronislava. I was born in California. My father was from Poland and my mother from England. I am a first generation American. I have two sisters and two brothers. We are all a year apart. We all traveled together growing up. By the time we were 10 and some, we had already traveled all over the Caribbean, North and Central America. My parents spoke several languages each. In my family we all had to learn to speak at least one language of our choice well. My favorites are the Latin based languages. I am fluent in Spanish, it being my favorite. Being raised by European parents made me realize the multitude of cultural experiences that are available to us in this country. My mothers interest in music and art opened many doors for me as a young adult. Watching my father turn his dreams to reality made me believe you can be and do anything, if you work hard for it.

I left for Mexico with my two young children and a dream that would lead me to open a retail shop in a small town. After a year of planning I opened TODO SANTOS SURF SHOP. I wanted to provide a place where young people could meet and participate in activities that interested them. I was quite surprised to find an international mix of youth in this town. I tried to bring attention to the beautiful environment that surrounds us and the need to preserve and protect it. I organized activities that I hoped would open their minds to the value of a good education and rewards of hard work. That you can make a difference and "all the small things" do count. I hoped to show them by example that if you can dream it , you can achieve it. My children and I were rewarded with experiences that we will cherish always. Our future is our young people and if the youth that surrounded me at that time are an example of what is to come, then I believe that our future is bright.
