Interview with John Franklin

Hi! The students in this group are: Brian N., Jose M., Benito P., Erik C., Raul F., and Alfredo M.

Our local leader is Mr. John Franklin. He is the Manager of the Bank of Montecito in Carpinteria. He is also on the School Board of Education in Carpinteria, and a past President of the Board.

Mr. Franklin was born in Santa Barbara. He has lived in the Carpinteria area for 55 years and currently lives in Summerland that is north of Carpinteria. Summerland shares many government offices with Carpinteria. Mr. Franklin is the Summerland representative on the Carpinteria Board of Education.

Mr. Franklin's parents are Alfred and Margaret Franklin. They immigrated to the United States from Germany. His parents left Germany prior to World War II because his mother was Jewish.

Mr. Franklin has many memories of his school days in Carpinteria. He lived in a house behind a school. One day at school he saw a house was on fire. It was his house! Other kids liked to go to his house to see what was in the refrigerator because there was always good food in it. He remembers that his teachers had a great influence on his life. When his mother died, his teachers and counselors helped him stay a "good kid." He started smoking cigarettes, but quit at 29 years of age. His favorite sport is baseball and he played on the high school team.

When Mr. Franklin was a boy, there were not many houses and people in Carpinteria. There were many lemon orchards. Now there are many houses and not many lemon orchards. Today there are lots of flower growers, avocado orchards and green houses.

Mr. Franklin has worked for the Bank of Montecito for most of his life. He went from college to his bank job. His hobbies are playing softball and golf.

Mr. Franklin is involved with the culture of our community. To him civic life means being a good leader and going to meetings to fix community problems. He is also involved in the Boys & Girls Club and Girls Incorporated. He thinks one person can make a difference. As a member of the "Vision 20/20 Committee" he hopes to bring the two main cultures of our community, the Anglo and Latino, together. He says we have the best community in the world.
