Miss Dorcus Wheelock

By Charlotte G.

Miss Dorcus Wheelock taught previously at Los Alamos. In July 1880 hired by the Carpinteria School District to teach at Carpinteria School (a little adobe school on Santa Monica Road). She taught 65 students in the largest school in the county. She cleaned out and fenced the school and, planted flowers and trees all by herself. She made an arbor for the children so they could eat in the shade. She made a playground and piped water for the children.

I chose this person because she sounded very interesting. I think it was neat that she taught 65 students. I like the fact that she fenced, planted flowers, made an arbor, and made a playground. I got this information from "More about Carpinteria As It Was Volume Two," by Jayne Craven Caldwell.
