Interview of Freddy Morales

The person whom we interviewed is Freddy Morales. He was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1951. He arrived in the United States in January 1971. His parents' names are Delia and Walter Morales. He grew up in Cochabamba, Bolivia before moving to Los Angeles, California. He remembers playing soccer and volleyball in his childhood. He also remembers jumping from the second floor into the sand when his house was being built. He descends from Inca and Spaniard people.

Freddy's dad was involved in politics and the Bolivian government at one time. His dad did this for several years until his mother forced him to quit. Freddy says that his greatest influence came from his dad as well as his cousin, George Northland, because they worked very hard to help the Bolivian community. Freddy is involved in graphics, publishing, and printing. His job is to supervise different departments involved in creating books, newspapers, magazines, and flyers. He is currently involved in the Chamber of Commerce of Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta; the 805 Basketball Club; and the Boys' and Girls' Clubs.

Freddy became involved with his children and their friends. He realized that there are many children right here in Carpinteria who need help. Some need help with homework, some need help with sports. Some need rides to practices. Others need a father figure to give them advice. There is a high school student who discovered his talent in art and Freddy has allowed him to help design the covers for basketball flyers.

Freddy remembers something unusual and special happening . One of his son's friends came over and started helping with the yard work. This kid always had something smart-alecky to say, but on that particular day he just wanted to help work. After a long time of pulling weeds and mowing the lawn, the kid turned to Freddy and said, "I wish you were my father." It was a very special moment. Freddy, at the age of 49, wants to continue helping the kids in Carpinteria and helping the schools with their publications. He hopes that one day, some of the children he has helped will turn around and help the kids of their community.
