What is your full name?

Robert James Godfrey

Were you named after anyone?

Robert = mother's father, James = my father

Where were you born?

Pontiac, Michigan

What are your parent's names?

James and Margaret Godfrey

What countries/states/cities did you grow up in?

Pontiac, Michigan. Raleigh, North Carolina. Santa Barbara, California

What do you remember most about your childhood?

School seemed easy then.

Tell me about your family?

Two younger brothers, David and Mark

What is your family background, personal history and their roles in the community?

My father's family grew up in Ontario, Canada and my grandfather worked on the on the railroad. My mother's family is from Wales in Great Britain. My grandfather worked in the coal mines. I'm the first one to be born in the United States.

How long have these significant relatives lived here?

My parents have been here since 1949.

Are there some other people that have contributed success as a community leader?

Tom Lewis (ex-mayor) and Nilo Fanucchi, longtime residents of Carpinteria, taught me to respect all people.

Could you describe your profession to me?

I write textbooks and test papers used in our school - which teaches sales skills to people in the trucking industry.

Describe the activities in which you are currently involved?

Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara - Chairman. I am also taking swing dancing.

What path did you take to become a leader?

I volunteered, I listened, and then I did the jobs.

What does the term "Civic Leadership" mean to you?

Helping other people do what they want to do.

Could you list and describe the changes or contributions you have made to the community?

I helped to strengthen the Chamber of Commerce. I helped to design the improved fire safety standards for Carpinteria. Describe any changes that have taken place since you became a leader?

Lot's of new houses and fewer migrant farm workers in Carpinteria.

How long have you been involved with the community?

Since 1973- Chamber of Commerce, CAC and fire department.

Tell me something unusual that has happened to you?

During the 1989 Painted Cave Fire, I helped to deliver live TV press reports on CNN, ABC, and NBC.
