Interview with Beverly Macias

By Mitchell M.

I think Beverly Macias' job is important because she helps keep the Carpinteria State Beach open and running smoothly. It is the world's safest beach. It is a busy place in the summer. Thousands of people come to visit our beach and stay in our campgrounds.

Q: How did you get your job?

A: Well, I really got lucky when I filled out my application. The person who hired me really liked me even though I had not worked in 7 years because I stayed at home when I had children.

Q: How do you like your job?

A: I love my job. It is fun and exciting. I can honestly say that I look forward to going to work most of the time. I miss being home with my kids but there is a fulfillment all of its own when you like what you do.

Q: How do you like your boss?

A: I have one of the fairest bosses of all. He listens and helps whenever possible. I feel really lucky that I have such a great job

Q: Is it a good job?

A: Yes, it's a great job. The people are great and I get to work outdoors most of the time.

Q: What do you do?

A: I work at the Carpinteria State Park Campground. I work in the kiosk checking in campers. Also, I do some office work with the rangers.

Q: Do you work with kids?

A: During the summer I like to do Junior Ranger programs. Children come to the class and we try to teach something new about the outdoors. These interpretive programs are great and we meet a lot of new children and hopefully they will remember something they learn.

Q: Do you wear a uniform?

: Yes. I wear a uniform because we want campers to know that when you see someone in a uniform that they are a park employee.

Q: How many hours do you work?

A: Well, I used to work about 30 hours a week but now I also work at a doctor's office and so I work at the park only 8 hours a week.

Q: What do you do at your job?

A: I check in campers. I also answer phones and questions. When I am in the park office I do ROC which means Report of Collections. This has to be done every 7 days.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job?

A: The best part of my job is that I like to camp and so I get along with the people really well. I also love the outdoors and I work outdoors a lot. We get to camp in the summer at the park or at any state park. It really is the outdoors that we love.
