Interview of Janice SugiyamaWhat is your full name? Janice Miyuki Sugiyama Were you named after anyone? My mother, Jane. Where were you born? Los Angeles, California. What are your parent's names? Kazuko Jane - mother, Fred Hirotaro - father. Where did you grow up? Los Angeles, California. What do you remember most about your childhood? Going to school during the week and then going to Japanese school every Saturday. Tell me about your family? I have two younger brothers. What is your family background, personal history? My grandparents came here from Japan between 1910 and 1920. All of my relatives that I know were put in relocation camps during World War II. Are there some other people that have contributed to your success as a community leader? My parents and my teacher who always encouraged me to try things. Describe the activities in which you are currently involved? President of the Santa Barbara, Ventura County Dental Society What path did you take to become a leader? School, Education, joined groups, and help lead. What does the term Civic Leadership mean to you? Sharing your talents to help your community. Could you list and describe the changes or contributions you have to made to the community? I helped to raise money for the new Girls' Inc. field. I also help with the Chamber of Commerce. Describe any changes that have taken place since you became a leader? The Chamber of Commerce has grown in size and become more active. How long have you been involved with the community? Chamber of Commerce since 1988, Dental Society since 1995.
