Q: What is your full name?

A: Susana Rea Mendoza

Q: Were you named after anyone?

A: This is my original name.

Q: Where were you born?

A: Ivapuato, Guanajuato

Q: What are your parent's names?

A: Irma & Phelipe, step dad is Javier.

Q: What do you remember about the house you lived in?

A: It had 7 bedrooms, a giant kitchen, a big living room, a huge bathroom, a long hallway and lots of plants around the hallway.

Q: What do you remember most about you childhood?

A: The town where I use to live, every single kid was allowed to play after their homework was done and right after dinner, 7:00 pm. On my street there used to be a lot of boys and girls the same age. We used to close the street and play either soccer, softball, or any other sport boys vs. girls, even grandmas and moms and dads used to be included.

Q: Tell me about your family?

A: I have one sister who is 31 and my brother younger than me is 27.

My mom and step dad have been living in the USA for the past 27 years. My dad lives in Mexico, my sister has been living here for 14 years, my brother too.

My mom is a certified hairstylist. My sister used to be a certified nurse's assistant, my brother Felipe, used to work as a phlebotomist (drawing blood). He's a computer programmer, and he is also a paralegal.

Q: What are your family background, personal history (grandparents, great grandparents, relatives) and their roles in the community?

A: My dad owns 2 pharmacies in Mexico. My step dad is a chef, my mom is a nurse. My sister is a secretary and my brother is a Cox Cable technician.

Q: Are there some other people that have contributed to your success as a community leader?

A: My husband has been one of the people that has had the most influence on my success. He likes me to do different things in life. He really supports me when I'm ready to take one more step in my life.

Q: Could you describe your profession to me? What do you do at your job?

A: I've been working in the medical field for the past 11 years. I am a nurse now.

I assist doctors with in-office surgeries, give injections as necessary, check temperature, blood pressure, pulse, weight on every patient that checks in for an appointment. I also book appointments into the computer. I type memos as necessary, translate for Spanish speaking patients. I work for patients who have cancer and I love talking to them, giving them lots of support, because they are very unhappy. I think for the past year working in this department, I have been able to bring a smile to these patients who need a lot of love and understanding.

Q: What other activities are you involved in?

A: I workout six times per week. I go to the gym, and try to jog on the weekends.

Q: What does the term "Civic Leadership" mean to you?

A: A person who tries to resolve community matters.

Q: Could you list and describe the changes or contributions you have made to the community?

A: I contribute with money to the United Way. I contribute with goods at least once a month to the Salvation Army.

Q: How long have you been involved with the community (with what he/she does)?

A: Medically speaking for about 10 years, the United Way for 10 years and the Salvation Army for the past 2 years.
