Julie Cole

Q: What is your full name?

A: Julie Murphy Cole

Q: Where were you born?

A: I was born in Napa, California

Q: What are your parent's names?

A: My dad's name is Doug Murphy and my mother's name is Joan Weiss

Q: What countries/states/cities did you grow up in?

A: I lived in Riverside, California until I finished elementary school. Then I moved to Ventura, California where I went to junior high and high school. I moved back to Riverside for college and lived there until just two years ago when I moved back to this area.

Q: What do you remember most about you childhood?

A: I lived with my grandparents for quite a few years. And I had a big black poodle that I loved to play with in my back yard.

Q: What is your background?

A: I am of German, Irish, French, English and Scottish heritage.

Q: Tell me about your family?

A: I have two older brothers and one older sister. My brothers are both in the construction business and my sister is a nurse manager at a big hospital. My dad is retired and my mother is an interior decorator.

Q: What is your family background, personal history (grandparents, great grandparents, relatives) and their roles in the community?

A: My most favorite person in the world was my grandfather, Paul Wipperman. He came to the United States from Germany when he was 18 years old. He first worked as a carpenter but eventually became the superintendent of the Seventh Day Adventist School Conference of Southern California. My grandmother was a 7th grade teacher.

Q: Are there some other people that have contributed to your success as a community leader? How have they influenced you?

A: My husband has been very supportive of any and all career moves I have made. He is very understanding of what it takes to be a successful teacher because he has been teaching high school history for over 11 years.

Q: Could you describe your profession to me? What do you do at your job?

A: I am a computer technology teacher at Main School. I teach all the students at my school how to use the computers in the lab. Each class has about 40 -45 minutes once a week with me. I teach them how to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint among other programs. I also teach typing and word processing. I teach the after school computer classes, supervise open lab time, coordinate the Cyber Fair team and work with Mrs. Lopez, Mrs. White and Mrs. Foley on the Dolphin Newspaper Club. I am also a Santa Barbara County Technology Mentor which means that I teach teachers how to use technology in their classrooms.

Q: Describe the activities in which you are currently involved?

A: Currently, I am teaching my students how to gather information from the Internet, how to save that information and how to turn it into a web page. We are learning how to use all kinds of technology such as digital cameras, scanners and PowerPoint. The Dolphin Newspaper is always going on and of course, right now we are in the middle of putting together our Cyber Fair 2000 web project. Also, I host a television show called "Line to Learning" with Cox Communications which focuses on how different teachers use technology in their classroom. I also host several special programs for the television channel such as the Old Spanish Days Parades and the Jason Project.

Julie Cole

Q: What path did you take to become a leader?

A: I graduated from college with a degree in business and I worked in that area for several years. I did some substitute teaching when I was between jobs one time and found that I really liked it. So I went back to school and got my teaching credential and became a teacher. Now I have a masters degree in technology, which has helped me to not only teach young students better, but also to become a teacher to teachers and help them with using technology.

Q. What other jobs have you had?

A. I have worked at Nordstrom's, managed a Little Caesar's Pizza, been a customer service representative for UPS, and managed several business offices. During college I worked as a swimming instructor and lifeguard.

Q: What does the term "Civic Leadership" mean to you?

A: Civic leadership means being a role model for my students and my peers. It means helping my community by educating my community.

Q: Could you list and describe the changes or contributions you have made to the community? A: My students are learning valuable computer skills as well as social skills and ethics which will enable them to be better prepared for their futures.

Q: Describe any changes that have taken place since you became a leader?

A: I have a lot less time for myself. But I have been able to get a lot of support from parent volunteers to help me teach my students better.

Q: How long have you been involved with the community?

A: I have been in Carpinteria for two and a half years.
