Our Interview With Mrs. Soto

By Jyoti J., Svetlana B., Kirby G., and Jose D.

The person we interviewed was Julie Ann Arellano Soto. Before she got married her last name was Arellano but now it is Soto. She works at our school, Main School. She is the librarian. She takes care of all the books in the library and she helps us find certain kinds of books. She orders books she thinks the students and the teachers will enjoy. She also reads good stories to us .

Mrs. Soto was born in Santa Barbara, CA but has always lived in Carpinteria. We don't remember her age, but it is over 30 and under 55.

Mrs. Soto's dad's name is Edward and her mom's name is Carmen. They also grew up in this area.

Mrs. Soto has 1 brother named Michael and three sisters named Eileen, Kathleen and Rebecca. They all live close by.

Before she got married she lived on a small avocado ranch in Carpinteria. She moved there when she was in fifth grade. She liked living there because there was a lot of room to play. She played a lot in the orchard. Before she lived on the ranch, Mrs. Soto lived close to town and across the street from a school. She liked that too because it was like having a giant yard to play in. One year there was a big storm and Mrs. Soto's house was lost in a big flood. That's when her family moved.

What Mrs. Soto remembers about her childhood is that she liked playing with the neighborhood kids and spending a lot of time at the beach. During the summer she would go everyday. She also liked to read a lot.....and she still does !

Mrs. Soto went to elementary school, middle school, and high school in Carpinteria. She still takes some college courses in Santa Barbara. She remembers working in her school library when she was in 6th grade. This is when she got the idea it would be a good job for her.

Now that Mrs. Soto is an adult she has a new family. She has 1 husband named Ben, 1 daughter named Andrea, and 1 son named David. Her daughter is in 11th grade and her son is in 4th grade. She doesn't live on the ranch anymore but she still lives in Carpinteria.

Mrs. Soto's ancestor's came from Mexico ( on her dad's side ) and from Spain ( on her mother's side ). She is a 6th generation Californian. Some streets in this county were named after her ancestors.

Mrs. Soto's favorite colors are purple and blue. She likes to eat tomatoes and her favorite T.V. show is Jeopardy. Mrs. Soto's favorite sport is baseball ( or softball ). She played on a team in High School. Her husband coaches and her son plays.

We asked Mrs. Soto who was she influenced by and what it means to her to be a community leader. She was influenced by her parents who taught her to be an example to other people and to make good moral decisions. She learned to treat others with respect. She was also influenced by her teachers. They taught her to work hard and do the best job she could do. She is a leader because she takes time to help out in her community. She volunteers at her daughter's and son's school and her church.

We are glad Mrs. Soto lives in our community and that she works at Main School.
