Interview with Mrs. White

Mrs. White

Our group interviewed our teacher Mrs. White. We are Ben, Darling, Colin and Logan. Her full name is Angela Jeannine Carreño White. She was not named after anyone, but her dad wanted names that could be pronounced in Spanish or English. She is Mexican-American. She was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on April 7, 1971. Her parents’ names are Joaquin Carreño Jr. and Charlotte Sanchez. She is the youngest of four children. Her oldest sister is Cristina Martin. Her brothers’ names are Joaquin and Daniel. She has lived in Carpinteria most of her life. She recently moved to Summerland. She grew up on Eucalyptus St. She remembers all the fruit trees in her backyard. One of her favorite memories is climbing the trees in Eucalyptus Park. One time she climbed a eucalyptus tree and almost fell. Fortunately her brother, Danny was there to catch her hand before she fell. Her dad just recently retired from Hobart where he worked for 30 years. Her mom worked at Jostens for 30 years until they closed in 1991. Her grandfather, Joaquin Carreño Sr., used to make many of the sidewalks in Santa Barbara.

Mrs. White

One of the reasons she became a teacher is because she spent a summer in Camden, New Jersey working with inner-city kids teaching music and drama. She enjoyed it so much she decided to become a teacher. One of the people who had a big impact on her was her principal from junior high, Tyson Willson. He encouraged her to be her best and recommended her highly for teaching in Carpinteria. Another influential person was her former boss at El Montecito Early School, Jeannine Morgan. Mrs. Morgan gave her a lot of experience working in the classroom with students.

Mrs. White says that the teaching profession is kind of like being a doctor, lawyer, psychiatrist, policeman, geographer, research specialist and sometimes even a dictionary. Most of the time though, a teacher is someone who helps students be the best they can be. She has been teaching third grade for almost five years at Main School. Right now she is getting her masters degree in Education Technology. She will graduate this spring.

She just finished a big project. She was the one who put together the school newspaper called the Dolphin Gazette. The students in the newspaper club wrote articles, and she put it all together. At least 500 newspapers are being read by people in the community. Her work as a teacher makes her a leader in out community. According to Mrs. White, a community leader is someone who contributes to making our community better, and she definitely does that.
