Mrs. Gravitz says:

We in room two got a Community As Classroom grant from the Santa Barbara County Education office. We also got the Anne Johnstone grant from U.C.S.B. South Coast Writing Project. We are appreciative of the extra funding for our work this year. Our community partner is the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. Our class is learning about contemporary art and using what we learn with all of our subjects. Contemporary art is fun because there are a lot of different kinds of art like landscapes, sculptures, watercolor, pastel and photography.

We have a scrapbook where we put our writing and art for this project. Marilyn Ethier of Creative Memories is helping us a lot with this part of the project. We do contemporary art around all of our subjects. For instance, we have a sea page where we are doing water colored picture and writing about our sea tank. We get our creatures from our special friend at U.C.S.B Marine Institute. Her name is Miriam Polne-Fuller.

Rita Ferri

Many artists have come from the Contemporary Arts Forum. We have taken three field trips to the Forum. Rita Ferri, Assistant Director, has presented the works at three of the Gallery exhibits. She has come several times to our classroom and shown us slide shows. She is the one who helped our teacher get this grant and set up our partnership. We could not have done this without Mrs. Ferri.

Rita Ferri

We are grateful to her. Many artists have visited our room and shared their work and art. We have interviewed these artists and have chosen a few to share with on the CyberFair. We interviewed a man named Dominique Reboul. He does sculptures that are really neat. Another artist that we interviewed is Marie Schoeff. She does charcoal art and just regular art too, like painting. Her paintings are very good. She showed us some of her paintings on slides. There was a painting of a dog in a house, an avocado, a hurricane, a bell and a boot. They're all very good. Recently, Richard Peterson came to our class. He does metal sculptures like the fireman at the Goleta fire station and the sculpture in front of the Santa Maria courthouse.

We look forward to all the artists who will be coming for the rest of the year. Over twenty artists have volunteered to come to our classroom. We even had Nancy Robbin come and teach us watercolor. We have many more projects to write about and include in our scrapbooks. Stop by our room at the Storytelling Festival and you will see our scrapbooks, masks, photographs, talking sticks, and sculptures. Enjoy reading all our writings. We have only four and a half months to go. What an exciting time it will be!

11. Her favorite stuffed animals are Froggy and his friend named Wrinkles.
