Q. What are your parents' names?

Richard L. Carty, Eleanor Maredell Carty

Q. What city did you grow up in?

Los Angeles, California

Q. What do you remember about the house you lived in?

one sister, one brother, two bedroom wooden house with a large kitchen, a one car garage, a large area on the roof

Q. What do you remember most about your childhood?

fun, good friends, outdoors, board games, small stores - the drug store and the feed store, share money for milk, friendly neighborhood, doctor across the street

Q. Tell me about your family.

father: mechanic, desire, foreman

mother: learned to drive in her 40’s

brother: 7 years younger

smart sister - skipped grades, had nice clothes

Q. What is your family background?

grandparents from Germany, England and France

uncle: pharmacist, widower with two kids

cousin: killed on D Day in World War II

father: began working when he was 14

mother: home maker, married at 16

Q. What path did you take to become a leader?

Went into the US Navy from high school, served on a mine sweeper, got married before out of service, went to college at Pepperdine, taught school (mathematics was my favorite subject), elementary principal, high school vice principal, Superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District

Q. How long have you been involved in the community in your profession?

39 years

Q. Are there some people who have contributed to your success as a community leader?

My wife and 7 children

Q. Describe the activities in which you are currently involved.

Carpinteria Beautiful, Adopt a School Program, Faith Lutheran Church, Cemetery Board. Playing volleyball

Q. Could you list or describe any changes that have taken place since you became a leader?

The Carpinteria Swimming Pool has been built. I affect people because I am interested in government.
